All the Basic Window Terms You Need to Know
If you consider replacing your windows, it’s essential to know the different types of window terminology. Unfortunately, there are so many terms for each type of window that can make the process confusing and complicated. This blog post will help simplify things by explaining all the basic house window terminology you need to know.
Window Replacement in Charlotte NC: Window Terminology
Window Frame. The window frame is the actual structure of your window system. It holds all of the glass or other material in place.
Head. Head is the term used for the horizontal frame top.
Jambs. The vertical sides of the window frame.
Sill. The horizontal base of the frame.
Window Sash. The window sash is the frame that holds all of your panes or individual glass pieces.
Sash Lock. A sash lock is a mechanism that prevents the window from being slid open.
Rail. The horizontal part of the window sash is known as rail.
Window Stop. The window stop is a piece that extends from either side or both sides of a window frame, and it is what keeps the sashes from moving too far.
Window Pane. A windowpane is one individual piece of glass that makes up the window.
Low E-Glass. Low E-glass is a type of glass that has been treated with an invisible, odorless gas that deflects ultraviolet rays and heat. This glass helps reduce cooling costs and fading of materials inside the house.
Gas Fill. Argon, krypton, or xenon are inserted between two sealed panes of glass. These gases are inert and act as insulation.
Tempered Glass. Tempered glass is a type of safety glass that is very strong, and when broken, it will shatter into a thousand small granular chunks instead of splintering into jagged shards – preventing injury.
Multi-Pane Glass. Multi-pane glass has several panes that are held together with a rubber gasket.
Grille Pane. A decorative grid is inserted between two panes of glass to simulate a multi-pane window.

We had our bathroom tub converted to a walk-in shower. Our experience with Carolina Home Remodeling has been exceptional - from the detailed estimate we were given (we were able to "design" our unit) to installation in the time specified. The crew who did the installation did a wonderful job.
